Tisha B'Av is one of the most significant days in the Jewish calendar

Tisha B'Av is one of the most significant days in the Jewish calendar, observed as a day of intense mourning and fasting.

Each year on the ninth of Av, Jews remember the tragic destruction of both the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem. It’s a time to deeply reflect on these profound losses through prayer and the observance of a strict 25-hour fast. The customs of mourning observed on Tisha B'Av are akin to those followed when mourning the loss of a close family member.

Despite the sorrow that Tisha B'Av brings, it also holds a message of hope. The day encourages reflection not only on the tragedies of the past but also on the resilience of the Jewish people and their enduring faith in future redemption.

The "urban heat island" effect

The "urban heat island" effect in Israel occurs in urban areas where temperatures are significantly higher than in countryside areas. This phenomenon is caused by human activities, such as building and road construction, which absorb and re-radiate the sun's heat even more than natural landscapes.

In Israel, the urban heat island effect can be pronounced in cities such as Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa. These cities experience higher temperatures, especially in summer, which can affect energy consumption, health and overall quality of life.

Urban planning and green infrastructure are important mitigation strategies for this impact. That is why Keren Kayemeth recommends going to the KKL-JNF forests.

Despite the war, the International Educational Seminar was held in Israel

150 teachers from the USA, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Guatemala, Mexico, Costa Rica, Romania, Ukraine, Moldova, Estonia, Bulgaria, Turkey, South Africa, and other countries came to Israel for a special seminar by Keren Kayemet LeIsrael - Jewish National Fund.
Despite the war, KKL-JNF does not cancel measures related to education. Especially when it comes to Jewish school teachers, because they are the ones who will tell the younger generation about the values of Zionism, Jewish and Israeli identification, as well as heritage and love of nature.
According to the KKL-JNF Eurasia report, during the next eight days the participants of the seminar will travel throughout the country and meet interesting people, including military personnel. Lectures and educational trainings on various topics have also been prepared as part of the program.
Igal Yasinov, general director of KKL-Eurasia, noted: "In the frame of the war and the rise of anti-Semitism, masked under the guise of anti-Israelism, throughout the world, the seminar takes on a special meaning. After returning to their countries, these teachers become de facto ambassadors of Israel, and will conduct important educational work."

As a result of the large-scale rocket attacks by Hezbollah on the northern cities and settlements of Israel, the KKL-JNF emergency teams are on special alert.
Keren Kayemet is doing everything possible to protect and restore the green landscapes of the north. In particular, KKL-JNF recently succeeded to collect a donation - special fire-fighting water balls from the company "LiquidGas".
One such ball helps to extinguish a fire by throwing it in the direction of the fire, while spreading an effective powder in 360 degrees, extinguishing a volume in a radius of about 9 square meters.Info and photo: KKL-JNF

Every year on the 18th of Iyar, on the 33rd day of the Omer, seven weeks between the second day of Passover and the harvest festival of Shavuot, bonfires are lit in Israel as a symbol of the Lag B’Omer holiday. The history of this date goes back to the second half of the 2nd century AD, the time of the rebellion against the Roman regime led by Bar-Kohba. Today, commemorating the rebels who fought for Jewish statehood, on Lag B’Omer, bonfires are lit, which in that era was a signal fire on the hills about the beginning of the resistance. Another miracle that happened on the 33rd day of the Omer was the end of the terrible plague that killed almost 24,000 of Rebbe Akiva's students during the uprising.

MAY THEIR MEMORY BE BLESSED

Tonight begins the Day of Remembrance, known in Israel as Yom HaZikaron. This is a solemn and significant day, dedicated to commemorating the fallen soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces and victims of terror.

Every year it is on the 4th of Iyar (which usually falls in April or May), this day is marked with ceremonies, memorial services, and moments of reflection throughout the country. At such moments, the entire nation of Israel comes together to honor and pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of Israel and its people.

May the memory of all fallen soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the future of the Israeli people, and those who died as a result of terrorist attacks be blessed.

YOM HASHOAH

Tonight, on 27th of Nisan (this year it’s 5-6th of May), we will light a candle in the memory of the Jews who were brutally killed by Nazis and their collaborators, and in the memory of those who, despite the fear of death, showed their heroism and courage, without losing human dignity and moral values.

On 27th of Nisan, Israel celebrates Yom HaShoah – Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day of European Jewry. It is important to know that there are two dates of the year to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust: 27th of January, which is an international day with memorial ceremonies around all over the world and it emphasizes the importance of remembering and learning from the Holocaust; and 27th of Nisan (according to the Jewish calendar) is, in fact, a national day in Israel that emphasizes both the commemoration of the victims and the honoring of acts of heroism and resistance.

Both days play a crucial role in keeping the memory of the Disaster and spreading the values of tolerance, justice and human dignity so that it NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN!

Tonight, the Jewish people from all over the world will celebrate Passover, a holiday of freedom and resilience, a holiday of faith and life.

PASSOVER IS COMING

Soon, the Jewish people all over the world will celebrate the holiday of spring and freedom, the holiday of Passover. According to the Jewish calendar, Nisan is celebrated every year from the 14th to the 21st of the month, but according to the Gregorian calendar, this year the holiday falls on April 22-30.
Preparing for Passover (Pesach) is a complex and multifaceted tradition that includes both practical and spiritual elements. To begin with, it is important to clean the entire house of the products that have undergone fermentation which is called "chametz".
The menu for the festive table and for the entire week of Pesach is especially important, because each dish has a certain ritual significance and represents great events. However, matzah, maror, hazeret, charoset, beitza, zroa and karpas became the real symbols of the bitterness of slavery and the taste of freedom. In addition to practical preparations, Pesach is a time for reflection and rethinking, a time for unity and deep immersion in the history of one's people.

6 months, as 134 Israelis are still held captive by Hamas terrorists. For 6 months, more than 1,200 of our relatives, friends or friends are not with us. 6 months of pain that you cannot reduce.

Eucalyptus is one of the most famous and beloved forest trees that were brought to Israel from different parts of the world.

Its popularity is well deserved given its rich history in the region. Originally planted as seedlings in 1884 in the botanical garden of the Mikveh Israel youth village in the central region of the country, the eucalyptus has become an integral part of Israel's landscape and a symbol of early Jewish settlements. Due to its tall stature and robust nature, this species can reach an impressive height of up to 40 meters, demonstrating its resilience and adaptability.
In its native Australia, eucalyptus grows in a variety of landscapes, from riverbanks and valleys to high mountains and flood-prone areas. There are approximately 800 species of eucalyptus in the wild. The tree has an amazing ability to absorb large amounts of water and grow rapidly. This characteristic has made it invaluable in efforts to drain malaria-infested swamps, highlighting its significant ecological contribution beyond its aesthetic appeal.

Today, some Jewish communities celebrate Purim Katan, or "little Purim", a kind of preparation for the main holiday.
The peculiarity of such a mini-Purim is that it falls on a leap year, when there are two months of Adar in the Jewish calendar (the main Purim is celebrated in the month of Adar II).

Despite its smaller scale, the spirit of fun and joy also permeates this holiday, trying in every possible way to distract from the mundane.
On Purim Katan, it is customary to give delicious treats and do good deeds for the benefit of one's community. In addition, it serves as a reminder of the resilience and spirit of the Jewish people, which is especially important in these difficult times.

Help Ukraine and you help Israel

On the eve of the second anniversary of the full-scale invasion, Andrii Zaika, the President of the Jewish National Fund Ukraine, in his article to The Times of Israel talked about Ukrainian-Israeli relations and how the support of Ukraine from Jewish philanthropists in North America and Europe can strengthen these ties.

The Red Adom Festival

The Darom Adom Festival (in Hebrew "red south") is an annual extravaganza in southern Israel that attracts both nature lovers and culture fans. This bright holiday starts every year in February - the period when red anemone flowers bloom. The festival is a real ode to nature through crafts, traditions and creativity.

Darom Adom reflects the delicate balance between human presence and the natural world, urging visitors to protect and nurture the ecosystems that underpin the region's beauty.

This year, in such difficult times, the Anemone March, which will be held from February 23 to 25, will be dedicated to the late Ofir Libstein, the head of the local council, who died on October 7 while protecting his family and community in Kibbutz Kfar Azа.

"... You know, I wanted to be a vet. I've always dreamed about it, because I love animals very much. When we were still living in Zhytomyr, before the war, I often fed homeless dogs and cats, and sometimes even provided first aid. There were many of them in the yard of my house. Today's situation has shown that life cannot be planned — the war has made its adjustments.
February 25, the second day of difficult struggle…

Jewish National Fund — Ukraine is launching its own project «Refugee Camp», which includes a 24-hour evacuation of people from the war zone to Zakarpatia region, the place of the camp location. The number of evacuated people is growing with every day: in the best case with a «go-bag», and in the worst — with nothing at all.
The Fund fully supportes every resident of the Camp: financial support, supply of food, basic necessities, clothing and hygiene items. In addition, every week the Board members together with volunteers organize meetings with refugees for their mental support, that is no less important today.
In dark times, light people are very visible. The more of these people are, the brighter is the light.

The Light always prevails the Darkness!

This evening, Jews around the world will light the first Hanukkah candle, which marks the beginning of the great holiday of Hanukkah - a holiday of light, goodness and victory.

As more than two thousand years ago, Hanukkah today symbolizes the invincibility of the Jewish people, as well as their devotion to religion and traditions in the face of evil.

On October 7, the descendants of the Maccabees faithfully came to the protect of the State of Israel, defending its right to democracy and freedom. Light always prevails Darkness! Victory to Israel! Victory to Ukraine! Peaceful and happy Hanukkah to every family, in every home!

An important event took place in Israel on Monday, February 21.

The Member of the Board of Trustees of Dnipro Jewish Community Vitaliy Zaidner took part in the rehabilitation of Jerusalem forests, which were severely damaged during the last year's fires.

2022 is the period of "Saturday" or "Shnat Shmita" — every seventh year of the agrarian cycle when the land rests from agricultural working and gains strength for a new future harvest. That is why the first hundred sprouts were planted in a special greenhouse and then after Smita having been finished, they will be taken to a worthy place — the forest of Jewish National Fund.
As well the ceremony was attended by the family members of Vitaliy Zaidner, the Head of JNF Ukraine Yonatan Ben Dor and the Head of Eurasia 1 Department of JNF Israel Inna Schegoleva. Vitaliy Zaidner was awarded a special diploma for his contribution to such an important issue for Israel. The Ambassador of Israel to Ukraine Michael Brodsky, the Chief Rabbi of Dnipro Jewish Community Shmuel Kamyanetsky and the President of JNF Ukraine Andriy Zaika conveyed the words of congratulations. They also stressed the importance of strengthening ties between Ukraine and Israel.

October 7It is difficult to reduce the pain, it is impossible to find words. 1,400 innocent lives whose dreams will not come true.
We must keep their memory and may it be blessed.

Adress by the President of JNF-KKL-Ukraine on the occasion of the Holocaust Memorial Day

January 27 is the International Holocaust Memorial Day.
The 20th century was the bloodiest in the human history. We have paid a high price for finally coming to simple truths - no ideology can question the value of human life.

The histories of the Ukrainian and Jewish people are closely connected. Including the memory of the terrible events that our people had to go through in the 30s and 40s. This is a painful but important memory that we must convey to future generations. It is said that those who do not know their past are doomed to repeat their mistakes.
Unfortunately, even today there are people who want to shed the blood of innocent people for the sake of imaginary greatness. That is why it is very important to call a spade a spade.

The death of innocent people is a tragedy. And their perpetrators will always be murderers, no matter under what ideology they justify their crimes.
We remember those who gave their lives. We remember the Holocaust. We remember pogroms and repressions. We remember the death camps. We remember Babi Yar. We remember and we will not allow it to happen again. Never again.

Because of the war, they cannot leave the house, so the activities were carried out at their apartments and were aimed at strengthening their stress resilience. The types of activities were chosen according to the abilities and capabilities of the residents, but mostly there were board games, conversations, sharing experiences, etc.

Besides it,recently, the KKL-JNF board members visited cities and communities near Gaza. The delegation visited the cities of Ashkelon, Sderot and Ofakim. The leadership of Keren Kayemet is now forming a strategic plan for the entire region so that it can once again prosper and develop.

The war has been going on in Israel for more than a week.
Since October 7th, Hamas has been attacking Israel with rocket attacks, hitting settlements: terrorists have killed innocent children, women, men, and the elderly people, including even Holocaust survivors. Horrible and painfully horrific footage of mass atrocities, barbarism and cruelty is being discovered every day.
And all this week, Ukrainians are extremely sincerely supporting the Israelis, going to support rallies, hanging Israeli flags and just saying heart warming words.
Thank you for standing by!

That "Black Shabbat" will remain in our memory forever.

The meaning of Tu bi-Shvat or "Rosh Hashanah la-Ilanot" is "New Year of the Trees".

It is a national Jewish Holiday that is traditionally celebrated in Israel and communities around all over the world.
Tu B'Shvat is on different dates every year. The reason is that the holiday was established by the Jewish calendar. It is always celebrated on the 15th day of the 5th month of the Jewish year (Shvat).
According to the scriptures, the trees having seen God was giving people a New Year's Holiday, they became sad and asked to set such a day for them as well. The Jewish wisemen marked Tu B'Shvat as the boundary between the harvest of the previous and the new year.

Today, the basic concept of Tu B'Shvat is human interaction with the environment. In Israel and in Jewish communities around the world it is the day of tress planting.

UKRAINE STANDS WITH ISRAEL

The Ukrainian office of Jewish National Fund was opened in Kyiv

Jewish National Fund is the world's oldest Jewish organization with a special legal status. It was founded 120 years ago at the Fifth Zionist Congress in Basel, Switzerland.

The Fund was founded and headed by Theodor Herzl and Johann Kremenezsky, who was born in Odessa. Translation from Hebrew - קרן קימת לישראל [keren kayemet le-I srael] - means the Fund for the awakening of Israel. Since the organization's inception, its goals have changed significantly, from the purchase of land for Jewish settlements to nature conservation, environmental education, and tourism development.
And 120 years later, the circle symbolically closes: October 6, 2021 in the presence of the President of the State of Israel Yitzhak Herzog and representatives of the Jewish community in Kyiv was announced the opening of the Ukrainian office of Jewish National Fund. Much work remains to be done, including strengthening ties between Ukraine and Israel.
Speaking at the opening of the JNF-Ukraine, Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog congratulated Jewish National Fund on resuming its activities in Ukraine. "Everything is returning in a strange way. The Odessa Committee began buying lands in Eretz Israel and establishing the first Jewish settlements long before the Fund was founded. The grain of JNF, the seed of Zionism, was sown in Odessa.

I want to thank all those who care for the good of the community, who defend the common interests and faith in the God, who will give them their good deeds, send their blessings and good luck!".
The culmination of the event was the giving of an honorary diploma to the newly elected President of JNF-KKL-Ukraine to Mr. Andrii Zaika, who thanked all present and addressed the speech: "... It is a great honor to be a part of this outstanding and world-famous family - Jewish National Fund. On behalf of the Jewish community of Ukraine and on my own behalf, I would like to state that we will make every effort to strengthen ties between the Jews of Ukraine and the State of Israel. We will be happy to serve as a bridge between the two countries!"

Jewish National Fund Ukraine sincerely congratulates you on the holiday of Sukkot and wishes you strength, faith, well-being and peace in your home and in your tent.

After numerous thinking and repentance comes a joyful, light and good holiday Sukkot. This is the manifestation of trust and gratitude to the G-d for a good fate for the new year. Usually, the celebration begins on the 15th of Tishrei and lasts all week. This year, the date falls on September 29th until October 6th.
The sukkah (tent) is a central aspect of the holiday, and it symbolizes the temporary dwellings of the people of Israel during their wanderings in the desert. In Jewish families, it is customary to spend almost the whole day in a tent, and sometimes even the night, honoring the memory of their forefathers.
Another symbol of Sukkot is the "arba’at ha-minim" - etrog, lulav, hadass and aravah - four species to fulfill the commandment of blessing for life in peace and unity.

VISIT OF THE AMBASSADOR OF ISRAEL AND THE LEADERSHIP OF JNF-UKRAINE TO DNIPRO

Jews have been living on the territory Dnipro (in the past Katerynoslav) since the moment of its foundation — the middle of the XVIII century. Today it is one of the most important centers of the development of Jewish life in Ukraine, led by a spiritual mentor — Rabbi Shmuel Kamenetsky. In Dnipro is situated the world's largest Jewish center, the Menorah, that was built in 2012 for a variety of community's events. Thus, a delegation headed by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the State of Israel to Ukraine Michael Brodsky, the President of JNF-Ukraine Andrii Zaika and the Chairman of the Board of the Fund Yonatan Ben Dor came here.
The working visit lasted several days. The delegates met with the Mayor Borys Filatov, discussed issues of cooperation and took part in a reception organized by the mayor in their honor and supported by the local diplomatic missions.

In addition, the delegation visited the Menorah Cultural and Business Center, Jewish educational institutions and met with local community's leaders. The host side was headed by the Chief Rabbi of Dnipro - Shmuel Kamenetsky. He told the guests about the more than 30-year history of the community he heads and was highly praised by the delegation.

VISIT OF THE AMBASSADOR OF ISRAEL AND THE JNF-UKRAINE LEADERSHIP TO ODESSA

Human well-being in harmony with nature has always been the main priority during 120 years of the activity of JNF. On the example of Israel, we see that without resources, but due to ideas and fruitful work, it is possible to harvest and plant hundreds or thousands dunams of forest. Ukraine is a fertile and resource-rich land. Jewish National Fund is glad to expand its cooperation and share its experience for the bright future of the two countries.
Recently, the Ambassador of Israel Michael Brodsky together with the Chairman of the Board of Jewish National Fund - Ukraine Yonatan Ben Dor made a working trip to Odessa - a large-scale center of Eastern European Jewry in the XIX-XX centuries.

It is worth noting that Odessa has given Israel many figures from completely different fields: in particular, the founder of the Fund Johann Kremenezky, the writer and journalist Zeev Jabotinsky, as well as talented doctors, artists and politicians which have left their mark not only in Israel but around the world.

As part of the fruitful visit, the delegation met with city and regional leaders, as well as with leaders of the local Jewish community.

JNF has been helping with it for already 120 years, it has been working for a clean green future for the country and its people.

HAPPY LAG BA-OMER

Every year on the 18th of Iyar (this year it falls on the evening of May 8), bonfires are lit all over Israel as a symbol of the Lag ba-Omer holiday. Lag (the letters "lamed" and "gimel") means the 33rd day of the Omer, the period of seven weeks between the second day of Passover and the harvest festival of Shavuot.

The history of this date goes back to the second half of the 2nd century AD, when there was an uprising against the Roman authorities' regime, led by Bar-Kohba. Nowadays, honoring the rebels who fought for the Jewish statehood, on Lag ba-Omer, bonfires are lit, which in those days was a signal fire on the hills about the beginning of resistance.

Another miracle that happened on the 33rd day of Omer was the end of the terrible plague that killed almost 24,000 of Rebbe Akiva's disciples during the uprising.

Traditionally, on Lag Ba-Omer, three-year-old boys get their hair cut, the banning on marriage (which continues in the previous days of the Omer) is lifted, bonfires are lit, picnics are arranged, and family members have a good time.

Have a peaceful, free and unbreakable Passover!!!

Jewish National Fund Ukraine sincerely wishing all the Jews a Happy Passover!
Very soon, during the Passover dinner, every family will read the Hagadah - the story of the holiday and the real legend of the birth and formation of a new free nation. During the 300 years of Egyptian slavery, the Jews lost all their faith in life and freedom. But it is worth remembering that Pesach (Passover) is celebrated precisely in the month of Nisan, which is the month of God's wonders and miracles.
In translation from Hebrew, Pesach comes from the word "passah", which means to pass by. God's punishments bypassed the Jewish people every time, teaching them to believe with a sincere heart and rely on the Lord.
Matzah and wine on the holiday table symbolize honoring our ancestors and their rocky path to a free life in the Promised Land.

KKL-JNF celebrated the anniversary of the staying of children who were evacuated to Israel from the Jewish orphanage in Zhytomyr (Ukraine)

A year ago, one hundred children from the Jewish orphanage "Alumim" in Zhytomyr were taken to Israel. Since then, they have continued their adaptation process within their new country.

For the first time ever, by themselves, they planted trees on the territory of the Or Hai School in Ashkelon. The Jewish National Fund - Keren Kayemeth le-Israel (KKL-JNF) organized the planting and prepared a very emotional ceremony on the occasion of such an event.

The donation for the purchase of these seedlings was made by the German Air Force. Therefore, the German Ambassador to Israel was invited to the ceremony.
Since the war began KKL-JNF took the responsibility for these children, participated in their evacuation to Israel and provide them with a warm home and the rest of the necessities. Their teachers and other employees of the "Alumim" orphanage, who are still staying with them, also came with the children. Immediately from Ben Gurion Airport, they were taken to the Nes Harim Field Center, their first home in Israel. They were surrounded by care and warmth. Classes and groups were held for them, they were taken on excursions, leisure activities and various activities were organized too. Volunteers collected toys, clothes and everything that was necessary for the children in large quantities.
And now KKL-JNF decided to organize a holiday for the children in honor of the first anniversary of their arrival to Israel. They decided that the best and the most emotional event would be tree planting.
At the ceremony, German Ambassador to Israel Steffan Seibert met the boy Artem, one of the students of "Alumim", who told him about what they had to go through - about the beginning of the war, about bombings and explosions. But also about how their acclimatization in Israel went. "We are very happy here, we are glad that today we planted trees in Israel together with KKL-JNF. I am very glad that we are here together with all my friends," said Artem.
"The Russian aggression against Ukraine brought enormous suffering to a huge number of innocent people. It does not fit in the head. Russia destroyed schools and homes, destroyed millions of lives, turned millions of people into refugees. I hope this war will end as soon as possible. I also hope that Ashkelon will become a cozy home for you. I am extremely grateful to the people of Ashkelon, KKL-JNF and my fellow citizens from the German Air Force for supporting these children and for organizing this wonderful event," said Ambassador Seibert.
Shariel Gon, Head of the donation department in KKL-JNF external relations department, said at the ceremony: "We are glad that these children have found their place in Israel and feel themselves at home. They perfectly integrate into life in a new country. It is a great honor for us at KKL-JNF that we were able to help them in a difficult moment for Ukraine, helped to take them to Israel, where they found a warm and loving home. We will continue to accompany them as long as necessary, and we will do everything possible for our brothers - the Jews of the Diaspora."

Good will always win over evil! Happy Purim holiday!

The history of Purim began more than two thousand years ago. The ambitious King Ahashverosh came to power, and all the enemies of Judea, led by the evil Haman, wanted to use Ahashverosh to destroy the Jewish people.
Jews were saved by their spiritual leader Mordechai with his niece Esther, who becomes the king's wife, but she hid her Jewish origin. Haman's plans were foiled and he was hung with the other traitors.
That lot fell to destroy the Jewish people, but they turned the day of fate into the day of their victory over their enemies and since then Purim is celebrated as the most joyful holiday.

Happy Tu B'Shvat!

Tu B’Shvat, or New Year of the Trees, is a national Jewish holiday traditionally celebrated on the 15th of the month of Shvat.
The main concept of the holiday is human cooperation with the environment. Thus planting trees is considered to be a customary on this day, either in Israel or in Jewish communities around the world. The Jewish National Fund has been supporting this custom since 1908, because planting sprouts symbolizes the unity of the Jewish people with their land.

JNF-KKL Ukraine is sincerely congratulating everyone on the holiday of Sukkot! Wishing goodness and peace at your tents and homes!

After the days of the Great Judgment, repentance and atonement for sins, the time of joyness is coming, begins the holiday of Sukkot as a manifestation of trust and gratitude to the Creator for His good judgment for the new year.
From Hebrew, "sukkot (sukka in sing.)" means a tent in which Jews are eating, sleeping and spending thier time during the entire week of the holiday. With this custom, they honor the memory of their ancestors, who had been living in tents while wandering through the desert for 40 years.

Illustration

Another symbol of Sukkot is the "arbaat ha-minim" — etrog (a citrus fruit with a pleasant smell and taste), lulav (a branch of a date palm - the date is tasty, but no smell), myrtle (good smell, no taste) and willow (no smell and does not taste) — the four species of plants to fulfill the commandment to bless.
